Investment Overview.

Venture capital involves investment - in the form of taking a shareholding - in a private limited company that is seeking external funding in order to achieve growth of sales and profits. Typically, the company cannot raise additional bank funding in order to realise its ambitions because of a lack of security to support loans. It must therefore seek equity capital. The venture capital investor provides such funding on a medium term basis and usually seeks an "exit" from the investment within five years.

DFI's investment activities are centred upon Derbyshire but also encompass the surrounding counties.

We invest amounts from £50,000 to £250,000.

We will work with other external investors, including "business angels".

It is not our aim to have majority shareholder control of the companies in which we invest. Nor do we seek to become actively involved in the day-to-day running of businesses. However, we usually insist on taking a place on the Board of Directors of each company, on the regular supply of financial and other management information and to be consulted about major decisions. We are pleased to utilise our experience of a variety of business situations to offer guidance to management on strategic and policy matters. Essentially we are looking to form a "partnership" with owners and managers which will be supportive and bring success for everyone.

Our funding can be used for a variety of purposes, including:-

- Working capital

- Expenditure on capital equipment

- Purchase of a business

- Management buy-outs or buy-ins

- Development and marketing of new products or services

- Part-refinancing bank debt
